Lux Center lecture to focus on biblical resources for peacemaking

The Lux Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies at Sacred Heart School of Theology recently hosted a lecture by Professor Yehezkel Landau of Hartford Seminary entitled Biblical Resources for Peacemaking: Liberating Lessons from Genesis.

In his Feb. 12 talk, Professor Landau examined passages in Genesis that offer lessons for healing conflict and building peace.

He noted, “The Creation story and episodes in the lives of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs can teach us how to wage peace in a culture of violence. While many theologians cite the Exodus narrative on this topic, Genesis presents a vision based on transforming sibling rivalry and gender injustice.”

Concrete examples from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will be used to ground the discussion.

After earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Harvard, Landau immigrated to Israel in 1978. A dual Israeli-American citizen, he is a noted author and lecturer, and has been a leader in the fields of interfaith education and Jewish-Arab peacemaking. At Hartford Seminary, Professor Landau directs an interfaith training program for Jews, Christians, and Muslims called “Building Abrahamic Partnerships.”

This was the second annual winter lecture presented by The Lux Center. The Lux Center was established in 2010 to honor the career of Sacred Heart Professor Emeritus Richard Lux, and is North America’s only seminary-based center for Catholic-Jewish studies. It provides public resources related to Catholic-Jewish dialog, including this lecture and a significant library collection on the topic. It also funds seminarians’ study of Judaism in the classroom and in Israel.
